UV Light For HVAC

UV light has been used in numerous applications for many years. But more recently, UV light is being implemented in a slightly different way — HVAC. How Can UV Light For HVAC Help?

First things first, why would you want UV light implemented in your HVAC system? UV light is commonly used in hospitals, schools, airports, and other locations as a means to improve indoor air quality and kill germs and bacteria. UV light has a specific wavelength that is mostly harmless to humans and animals and deadly to bacteria, viruses, and germs. Now we stay mostly because UV light is actually contained in sunlight, and in high enough concentrations, results in the common sunburn. However, UV light for HVAC is in much smaller concentrations and provides no threat to humans or animals — just viruses and bacteria.

UV light is used on your furnace, on your AC coil surfaces, or other locations throughout your home or office’s HVAC system. The UV light sanitizes and improves the air quality as it passes through the system. This process kills mold, mildew, germs, bacteria, viruses, pollen, and other harmful air pollutants on contact leaving you with fresh, healthy air.

What is UV Light?

Without getting too technical, UV light is a form of light that is invisible to the human eye. While it may sound strange to have light that we can see, there are actually many forms of light outside of the visible light spectrum for humans. The appearance, or lack thereof, of light is determined by its wavelength. Humans can sense (see) light with wavelengths of about 400 nm to 700 nm roughly. The type of UV light used in UV light for HVAC systems is technically called UVC and has a wavelength of 100 to 280 nm — just outside of our visible light spectrum.

Is It Safe?

We touched on this a little earlier, but the concentration of UV light used in HVAC systems is completely harmless to humans and animals in your home or office. While UV light in high enough concentrations can cause sunburn and other problems for people, there is not nearly enough UV to harm your or your family in any way. Rest assured, though, just because UV light for HVAC isn’t harmful to humans doesn’t mean that it isn’t very effective at sanitizing indoor air.

UV Light and COVID-19

Since COVID-19 is a newer form of virus (relative to other viruses), more studies need to be done to concretely prove the ability of UV light to kill this specific virus. However, COVID-19 is an airborne virus, and UV light has been shown very effective time and time again at destroying other types of airborne viruses on contact. So while further research needs to be conducted, you can still expect UV light for HVAC to protect you and your family from a wide variety of viruses, mold, allergens, bacteria, mildew, pollen, and more.
